Always in good CompanY SOUNDS FAMILIAR By Baby A. Gil (The Philippine Star) Updated March 26, 2010 12:00 AM |

I like the way that Moy Ortiz put it in his liner notes for Lighthearted, the latest CD by The CompanY. “Amidst the chaotic cacophony of 21st century living, it is quite healing to get back to the basics, de-stress and just take it easy.”
And take it easy is just what the country’s foremost performing group does in the very light Lighthearted. The CompanY is known for its extraordinary vocals. The members can really sing and they harmonize beautifully. They can also be counted on to put their distinctive stamp on any song. Be it originals like Everlasting Love or Muntik Na Kitang Minahal, which I must say, have become much loved standards, or covers of anything, they will make it sound like something by The CompanY.
And that is just what Moy, Annie Quintos, Cecile Bautista, Sweet Plantado and Jay Marquez did with 14 of today’s hits. For the uninitiated or those who live in the backwoods of Timbuktu, let me tell you that the rule nowadays is you are not hip if you do not like these sounds. Okay let us say, you do not really have to like them, but you surely must have listened to them a few times these past few months and know some people who think these are the coolest songs ever.
Take a look at the trendy tunes that The CompanY have chosen to include in their Lighthearted album. Empire State Of Mind, by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys; Do You Remember by Jay Sean; Thinking Of You by Katy Perry; One Less Lonely Girl/Boy by Justin Bieber; Fireflies by Owl City; Half Of My Heart by John Mayer; Fifteen by Taylor Swift; Let’s Just Fall In Love Again by Jason Castro; Lucky by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat; Smile by Lily Allen; You Belong With Me also by Taylor Swift; Two Is Better Than One by Boys Like Girls; Good Girls Go Bad by Cobra Starship; and Where Are You Now by Honor Society.
With Sunny Ilacad, who did those hit CDs by Princess, as producer and arranger, Moy as vocal arranger put The CompanY through their paces singing songs they never imagined performing. Think Taylor Swift or Owl City, let alone recording these. But as the age-old rule has always emphasized, you can do anything with a beautiful melody.
And that, is what all these songs have in common. Beautiful melodies. You can slow these down, quicken, set to a new beat or strip them down to the basics, etc. And at the end of the day, these will still be what they were at the beginning, beautiful melodies.
So while they may have started out with unfamiliar titles at the start, The CompanY soon found themselves facing only beautiful melodies. And after over 20 years in the business, they certainly know their way around those.
Check out how The CompanY fares with their first stripped down to the bone album when they launch Lighthearted at the atrium of the Shangri-La Mall in Ortigas Center at 6 p.m. on March 28. Singer-harpist Noelle Cassandra is also set to perform.
Hi friends.
We'd like to invite you to a free concert; the album launch of our 19th album entitled Lighthearted. March 28, Sunday, 4 pm at the grand atrium of the Shangri-La Plaza Mall. Lighthearted is a contemporary acoustic pop album of duets. Our special guest is Noelle Cassandra, Asia's only harpist/singer/songwriter.

Two years ago, The CompanY had the pleasure and privilege of recording an orchestral album (Group Hug) with Gerard Salonga and FILharmoniKA. Together, we created majestic sonic landscapes as we paid tribute to iconic musical groups.
This time around, The CompanY is going in the exact polar opposite direction. “Lighthearted” is a contemporary pop acoustic album of duets. This collection of songs is stripped down, organic and relaxed. There is nothing too high concept about this one; just easygoing and easy listening music. We liken this to a low maintenance friend who delivers high rewards……or…. a day at the ear spa!
Upon the prodding of Boss Vic Del Rosario, Sunny Ilacad, Baby Gil and MG Mozo, The CompanY worked on contemporary material which compelled us to go out of our comfort zone. Because we were not exactly in our element with the styles and content of these recent hits, entering the studio anew was like entering uncharted territory. The acoustic arrangements, which were oftentimes slowed down, would throw us off sometimes. And we had to cautiously tweak the melodies and lyrics, even the points of view, so that it would suit our group sound and sensibilities. Case in point is Taylor Swift’s “Fifteen”, now transformed as a mother and daughter song of advice with the guest appearance of Cecile’s 11 year old daughter, Chile. Also, while we were told to concentrate on 2009 hits, we narrowed down the choices even further to songs with nice melodies that could be “prettified” even more by our harmony, giving them that “CompanY” stamp.
So we plodded on, working on two or three songs at a time to beat a deadline and after a month’s work, here is the new hybrid baby. Not quite what you would expect maybe, but yes, it is still decidedly, lightheartedly, simply, very CompanY.
Amidst the chaotic cacophony of 21st century living, it is quite healing to get back to the basics, de-stress and just take it easy, don’t you think?

We are very pleased to share with you that the Philippines’ premiere vocal group, The CompanY, is celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary this year, 2010. This quarter of a century has been productive and blessed for these versatile vocalists: releasing 19 studio albums, garnering 39 music industry awards (Awit, Katha, Catholic Mass Media), writing and filming 2 Video releases, appearing in 3 television solo specials, holding national and international vocal workshops and being veterans of countless concert tours both in the Philippines and abroad.
To celebrate their body of work and good fortune, The CompanY shall be staging an anniversary concert celebration entitled Co.25 on October 16, 2010 (Saturday) at the Music Museum, Greenhills. This concert performance will be an eclectic mix of music genres and styles that will feature the original hits of The CompanY as well as their show stopping musical numbers.
Moreover, Co.25 promises to be a visual treat to its audience. As a consistent trademark of The CompanY in their major concert performances, great attention will be placed on the staging and costuming of these musical numbers. A great balance of theatricality and commercial accessibility- a feat that the group has managed to achieve throughout these years. Co.25 is both a retrospective and a forecast for the vocal harmony quintet that has defied time and showbiz’s conventional rules.
