Lighthearted (Viva Records) - Liner Notes written by Moy Ortiz and Cecile Bautista

Two years ago, The CompanY had the pleasure and privilege of recording an orchestral album (Group Hug) with Gerard Salonga and FILharmoniKA. Together, we created majestic sonic landscapes as we paid tribute to iconic musical groups.

This time around, The CompanY is going in the exact polar opposite direction. “Lighthearted” is a contemporary pop acoustic album of duets. This collection of songs is stripped down, organic and relaxed. There is nothing too high concept about this one; just easygoing and easy listening music. We liken this to a low maintenance friend who delivers high rewards……or…. a day at the ear spa!

Upon the prodding of Boss Vic Del Rosario, Sunny Ilacad, Baby Gil and MG Mozo, The CompanY worked on contemporary material which compelled us to go out of our comfort zone.  Because we were not exactly in our element with the styles and content of these recent hits, entering the studio anew was like entering uncharted territory. The acoustic arrangements, which were oftentimes slowed down, would throw us off sometimes. And we had to cautiously tweak the melodies and lyrics, even the points of view, so that it would suit our group sound and sensibilities. Case in point is Taylor Swift’s “Fifteen”, now transformed as a mother and daughter song of advice with the guest appearance of Cecile’s 11 year old daughter, Chile. Also, while we were told to concentrate on 2009 hits, we narrowed down the choices even further to songs with nice melodies that could be “prettified” even more by our harmony, giving them that “CompanY” stamp.

So we plodded on, working on two or three songs at a time to beat a deadline and after a month’s work, here is the new hybrid baby.  Not quite what you would expect maybe, but yes, it is still decidedly, lightheartedly, simply, very CompanY.

Amidst the chaotic cacophony of 21st century living, it is quite healing to get back to the basics, de-stress and just take it easy, don’t you think?
